PhD Marine paleoclimate data analysis (m/f/d)
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
PhD Position "Marine paleoclimate data analysis" (m/f/d)
Background
Natural climate variability on decadal to centennial time scales is currently not well constrained and existing climate models appear to be too stable in magnitude as well as in the response of climate variability to mean climate changes. This PhD project will quantify the fingerprint of marine decadal to centennial surface and subsurface temperature variability. This requires the analysis of instrumental observations and paleo-climate observations from sediment cores and corals using advanced statistical methods and proxy system modelling. In collaboration with two other PhD students working on terrestrial climate variability and coupled climate model simulations, the project aims to find climate model configurations that allows for climate simulations with more realistic natural climate variability.
The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at
