Model implementation and analysis of Waste Repository and Geoenergy Systems.
PhD student position; working time 65% (25,35 hours per week), limited to 3 years or Postdoc position; working time 100% (39 hours per week), limited to 2 years in the beginningYour tasks:
The candidate will work at the Department of Environmental Informatics of UFZ within the strategic research topic on “Georessources for the Energy Transition and a High-Tech Society”. In this context, the candidate is expected to perform fundamental and applied research, implementing and understanding coupled reactive transport and multiphase flow processes on geothermal and nuclear waste disposal systems. Large scale models, employing reliable macroscopic laws capturing heterogeneity effects (e.g. fractures) on multiphase flow and reducing the computational complexity of modelling of coupled processes are necessary. To this end, reliable modelling techniques will be developed by and verified to integrate the key processes for geo-models into OGS-6.Specific tasks are:
- Extension of the existing modeling workflows and constitutive relations in OpenGeoSys-6
- Model implementation and software development
- Testing and demonstration of the implementation correctness by benchmarking (i.e. analytical solutions, published results)
- Application of the workflows to understand long term evolution of nuclear naste Repositories and geothermal systems
Your profile:
- University/or Master degree in computer sciences, applied informatics/ mathematics, environmental/ chemical engineering, environmental sciences, hydrogeology or related disciplines. Alternatively, demonstration of practical proficiency in computer coding/modelling for application oriented software would be also possible.
- Good programming skills and practice will be beneficial (i.e. Python, Matlab, although C
is preferable)
- Experience in performing computational analysis such as Finite Element Method or similar and their application in mass transport in porous media or multiphase flow simulations
- Experience with multi-component geochemical reactive transport is desirable.
- Experience with OpenGeoSys (www.opengeosys.org) or other open source software is an asset
- Very good written and oral communication skills in English are essential. German may be beneficial but not necessary
