PhD Modelling biodiversity in complex environments
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
PhD Position "Modelling biodiversity in complex environments" (m/f/d)
Background
The Biodiversity Theory Group is a new lab at the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity in Oldenburg. The lab focuses on the development of new mathematical and computational approaches to the diversity of species in ecological systems. We seek to make transformative progress by using ideas from Statistical Physics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Networks and Data Science to describe ecological systems in new ways.Tasks
You willdevelop and apply modeling approaches for ecological communities, with particular focus on establishing new modeling frameworks. Understanding how diverse ecological systems function, how biodiversity is maintained and how functioning is impacted by the loss of diversity is a major theoretical challenge. To make progress will likely require a new generation of models that describe our ecological environment in radically new ways.
work at the forefront of developing these new ways to see nature. The work will build heavily on approaches from statistical physics, complex networks and dynamical systems theory. While the focus is on the ecological communities, paradigmatic processes from other fields (e.g. epidemic spreading, opinion dynamics, strategic interactions) may be considered to test and benchmark the new approaches.
Requirements
- Master level (or equivalent) qualification in Physics, Mathematics, Biology or related fields.
- Solid command of English language in speech and writing.
Additional skills and knowledge
- Good mathematics and programming skills.
- Enthusiasm for work in ecological system
