Postdoc
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
Postdoc "Hydroacoustic and sedimentological investigations in Marine Protected Areas of the German Bight (North Sea)" (m/f/d)
Background and Tasks
We seek a scientist to investigate the physical influence of trawl-beam fishing on the seafloor. The overarching goal to be addressed is the concurrent use of hydroacoustic/sedimentological habitat-mapping methods (in conjunction with existing hydrographic models), subrecent data, and current biological data to decipher and eventually predict the effect of planned measures of the exclusion of trawl-beam fishing in marine protected areas (MPA) of the German Bight (North Sea). In addition to ship-based hydroacoustic measurements, it is planned to develop a seafloor-based observation system.Requirements
- PhD degree in marine geosciences (geology, geophysics, phys. geography, and related fields) and the ability to develop and successfully pursue interdisciplinary research within a team are required.
- Expertise in hydroacoustics and sedimentology is essential.
- Background in benthic marine habitats is desired.
- Skills in GIS and programming, as well as technical abilities, will be highly ranked.
- Proficiency in English both written and spoken and a visible track record of scientific publication is essential.
- You must be willing and able to participate in ship-based expeditions.
