PostDoc BC measurements in the Arctic
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
PostDoc "BC measurements in the Arctic" (m/f/d)
Background
This position is part of the DFG project Transregional Collaborative Research Centre TRR 172 - ArctiC Amplification: Climate Relevant Atmospheric and SurfaCe Processes, andFeedback Mechanisms (AC)3, subproject B04 "Spatial distribution, sources and cloud
processing of aerosol particles".
Tasks
Determination of the spatial distribution of black carbon in the atmosphere using airborne and ground-based measurements:
- Performing measurements with the Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) from the aircraft and on the ground
- Calibration and characterization of the SP2
- Participation in the planning and implementation of campaigns with research aircraft
- Evaluation and interpretation of measurement data from different polar campaigns
- Implementation of the measurement results in radiation transfer modelling with the aim of determining the radiation effect of black carbon
Requirements
- PhD in geophysics, meteorology, chemistry or physics or related field
- Expertise in physics and chemistry of the atmosphere, as well as development of measurement systems and interpretation of in-situ data with special emphasis on black carbon and trace gases
- excellent English language skills and pleasure in working in an international and interdisciplinary team
- Relevant knowledge of programming languages (Python, Igor Pro, MATLAB, or similar)
- Willingness to participate in research expeditions to the polar regions lasting several weeks
- Independent work on the project is expected.
