PhD Networks of the coast (m/f/d)
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
PhD Position "Networks of the coast" (m/f/d)
Background
The Biodiversity Theory Group is a new lab at the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity in Oldenburg. The lab focuses on the development of new mathematical and computational approaches to the diversity of species in ecological systems. We seek to make transformative progress by using ideas from Statistical Physics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Networks and Data Science to describe ecological systems in new ways.Tasks
You will- focus on data analysis and mathematical modeling of social and ecological phenomena.
- develop and apply new mathematical methods to understand social data and processes with ecological relevance. The aim of this work is to develop new approaches to understand human behavior and its ecological consequences.
- pay special attention to the geographical scale of processes which is often neglected in population dynamical models. While specific targets will depend on the newest developments in the field, specific applications could focus for example on global patterns of ship movements and their impact on bio-invasions, demographics of coastal communities and their environmental impact, or the adoption of (ecology-related) innovation.
Requirements
- Master level (or equivalent) qualification in Physics, Mathematics, Sociology, or related fields.
- Solid command of English language in speech and writing.
- Some experience in mathematics and/or programming skills..
Additional skills and knowledge
