The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

Master Thesis in the field of bionics: "Development of stiffer and adjustable connection components"

Background

How can components of a particle accelerator be connected in a stiff and at the same time adjustable way?
We as the department “Bionic Lightweight Design and Functional Morphology” of the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) cooperate in an exciting, interdisciplinary research project with the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY). Innovative magnet carrier structures of a particle accelerator are developed and optimized. The carrier structures play a central role in the function of the particle accelerator, since they guarantee the stability of the magnets and thus also of the particle beam. In addition to the design of the support structures, the development of optimized connection components between the individual components of the overall system is of great importance. These components should be very stiff and adjustable at the same time. And here you come into play.

Tasks

  • Familiarization with the topic and literature research of currently used connection components
  • Development and construction of innovative connection components
  • FEM calculation of rigidity and comparison of results with analytical calculations
