Background and Tasks

Research Division: Shelf Sea System Ecology & Periglacial Research
Methane and carbon dioxide are prominent greenhouse gases. Especially arctic lakes are estimated to contribute to a large extent to the increasing atmospheric concentration of methane in the arctic. However, the details of the methane cycle in such thermocarst lakes are not well known, yet. Therefore, in a holistic approach, several working groups will focus on one thermocarst lake in Siberia trying to understand the different processes forming this lake and its carbon turnover. Our group will focus on the distribution of methane in the water column under ice or open water and try to verify which sedimentary structures result in increased methane concentrations.

With a cavity ring-down spectroscopic instrument we will measure methane concentration in high spatial resolution in spring and summer conditions.
