Thesis Seascape approaches to map habitats in the North Sea

Literature shows an inflation of the use of the word “habitat”. Classically habitat is meant as the environmental conditions a living form requires to establish, live and reproduce. However more recently, it has become a concept to support the description of the spatial environment only that assumes the species to live there without testing whether this hold true. The North Sea is a shallow continental shelf mostly dominated by soft substrates. Under this framework, it is currently unknown how many habitats are there, which is obviously hampering proper conservation measures.

Aim

Aim of the project would be to map habitats in the North Sea and their geographical properties taking advantage of the large amount of data available and using advanced statistical tools (i.e. machine learning) and GIS techniques.

Requirements

Interested candidates should have a strong interest in seascape ecology and good skills in R as well as good English knowledge.
