Background and Tasks

Our section Marine Biogeosciences invites applications for a position partially funded by DFG (German Research Foundation) and partially by the AWI strategy fund project DustIron as Postdoctoral researcher to study the contribution of different iron sources to the ocean under present-day and glacial climate conditions, using a global biogeochemical model of iron. This project is in collaboration with the institute of Geology and Mineralogy at the University of Cologne, and the sections Marine Geochemistry, Climate Dynamics and Marine Geology at AWI.

Iron is an essential micronutrient for ocean biota and the enhanced dust deposition has been proposed to be a key factor to lower atmospheric CO
2
during the last glacial maximum. There is, however, still no consensus on the mechanisms behind the iron distribution and especially on the relative role of different external iron sources to the ocean (e.g. aeolian dust, marine sediments, hydrothermal and riverine inputs).

A new tool to constrain the role of the different oceanic iron sources is the stable isotopic composition of dissolved iron. You will on the one hand use a global biogeochemical model of iron with an explicit representation of isotopic effects to disentangle the role of different processes affecting the isotopic composition of dissolved iron in the ocean; and on the other hand study the effect of modern and past changes in natural dust deposition over Southern Ocean in a project that aims at improving process understanding in a closely coupled sediment data – model approach.

Requirements

  • You should have a finished doctoral thesis (by the deadline of application) in marine chemistry or biology, environmental sciences, oceanography or a related discipline
  • Knowledge and experience in programming with Fortran and in using Unix/Linux computers is required
  • Experience with climate models or marine biogeochemical models is advantageous
  • You should be willing to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Very good knowledge of English is expected
