PostDoc Impact of multiple drivers of the changing Arctic marine biodiversity

Awi - via Umantis - Salzwedel - 22-01-2020 zur Vakanz

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PostDoc "Impact of multiple drivers of the changing Arctic marine biodiversity" (m/f/d)

Background

To detect climate-driven environmental and biotic changes in a transition zone between the northern North Atlantic and the central Arctic Ocean, the Alfred Wegener Institute established the Arctic LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) observatory HAUSGARTEN in the Fram Strait between Greenland and Svalbard. This project will use existing long-term data on environmental and biological parameters collected at HAUSGARTEN (Arctic), complemented by samples from the long-term sediment trap programs Cape Blanc and Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP). These data sets will be analyzed using novel approaches of time-series and network analysis and statistical modelling to identify and characterize major drivers of plankton and benthos biodiversity and uncover implications of changing biodiversity on prime ecosystem functions, e.g. the efficiency of the biological carbon pump.

The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at

.

Tasks

  • Compile and analyze data sets from the long-term observatories HAUSGARTEN, Cape Blanc, and PAP.
  • Identify the role of plankton composition for particulate organic carbon export and benthic communities.
  • Determine the relationships between environmental (ocean dynamics) and biological parameters (composition of biota and exported material) to assess the impact of multiple drivers of marine biodiversity change.
  • Identify regions of high vulnerability to biodiversity change and its effects.

Requirements

  • PhD in marine biology, biological oceanography or related field.
  • Knowledge in physical oceanography.
  • Skills in analyses of large data sets (time-series and network analyses, statistical modelling) or remote sensing data.
  • Experience with programming and statistical software (R, MatLab, or Python).
  • Willingness to participate in shipboard sampling campaigns.
  • Enthusiasm for working in an international and interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent English language skills.
